𓄂 Consortium for the Research and Preservation of the Egyptian Labyrinth 𓆃
Beneath the sands of Hawara lies one of the most enigmatic lost wonders of the ancient world—the legendary Egyptian Labyrinth. Described by Herodotus, Strabo, and Pliny as a vast subterranean temple of countless halls and corridors, this colossal structure has fascinated explorers and scholars for millennia. Though long believed to be destroyed, the 2008 Mataha-Expedition1 —the first extensive geophysical survey of Hawara—uncovered compelling scientific evidence2 that vast remnants of this monumental complex still endure, hidden deep beneath the surface.
The Consortium for the Research and Preservation of the Egyptian Labyrinth was established to rekindle global awareness of this forgotten marvel. Our mission is to gather and disseminate knowledge on the Labyrinth’s history, archaeology, and cultural significance while serving as a central hub for those dedicated to its study and preservation. Through this online platform on Substack, we aim to:
Provide information on historical accounts, past explorations, and excavations.
Share updates on research, discoveries, and scientific advancements related to Hawara.
Connect scholars, archaeologists, and researchers engaged in uncovering the Labyrinth’s secrets.
Offer a space where press, supporters, and researchers can collaborate.
Foster awareness and support for future investigations into this unparalleled archaeological mystery.
However, the urgency of our mission extends far beyond the continuation of research. The Hawara archaeological zone is now critically endangered due to rising human-induced saline groundwater, which threatens to irreversibly damage what remains of the Labyrinth and its surroundings. The site is in dire need of immediate protection and restoration—a goal that can only be achieved through the cooperation of multiple stakeholders.
Despite the growing evidence of its importance, efforts to preserve the Labyrinth face two major obstacles:
Obstruction by Egyptian authorities, who continue to block preservation and excavation efforts at Hawara, despite the multitude of our project applications.
A near-total blackout by the international press, which has systematically shadowbanned efforts to bring awareness to the historic existence of the labyrinth, its discovery since 2008, and the urgent need for intervention.
Founded by The Cosco Foundation3, this initiative welcomes all serious contributors, researchers, and patrons interested in supporting the project. Established in 2009 by Louis De Cordier—coordinator of the 2008 Mataha Expedition—The Cosco Foundation (Belgian registration number: 0818.548.059) is a recognized non-profit organization committed to supporting and promoting ongoing archaeological research at the ancient labyrinth site of Hawara.
